The Deadliest Creature On Earth!

What is the deadliest creature on earth? Surely, sharks, snakes, other scary creatures come to mind almost immediately. Would you believe the answer is…the mosquito. Yes, you read that correctly. The mosquito kills more people in one day than sharks do in an entire century!

Getting bitten by a mosquito, the insect universally hated by the world over, can not only be annoying and itchy- but can also lead to much, much more serious problems. Mosquitoes transmit a number of potentially serious illnesses. They include dengue, West Nile virus, yellow fever, malaria, Japanese encephalitis and the Zika virus. They can even carry heart worm, which can be lethal to your dog. Over 1,000,000 people each year die worldwide from mosquito-borne diseases.

These pesky, disease carrying insects have been on Earth for more than 100 million years, and they can be found on every continent except for Antarctica. The mosquito basically exists because they are next to impossible to wipe out. There are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes, and in the United States alone there are 176 identified types of this biting little bugger. As long as they can find food, they will continue to thrive.

There are also a few other DIY ways to try to control the mosquito population in your yard. All mosquitoes need water to survive, and surprisingly just a few inches of water is all it takes for a female mosquito to deposit her eggs. Standing water such as roof gutters, birdbaths, puddles from a rainstorm are a breeding ground for mosquito larvae to develop quickly. Being vigilant about dumping any standing water is key in helping keep mosquitoes under control.

Another temporary solution is having outdoor fans installed on your deck, porch or patio. This will make it undesirable for mosquitoes and will help assist to keep them away temporarily. Mosquitoes don’t like wind, as they are very weak flyers, so the breeze from the fans will allow you for a more enjoyable evening relaxing with your family or friends.

These measures, however, are temporary, and won’t fully resolve your mosquito problem. These methods may help to control the adult mosquitoes, however, if the eggs and larvae are left untouched, it will lead to another mosquito problem arising- and quickly.

If despite your best efforts, these biting creatures continue to be a problem, the most effective way to reduce the mosquito population is contacting a professional pest control service. By contacting Presidio Pest Management, you can ensure that our highly skilled and trained technicians will reduce the mosquito population on your property so you can once again get back to safely enjoying the outdoors.
